关羽，本字长生，后改云长，河东解人。三国时期蜀汉名将，由将而侯而王而帝而圣，一生忠义仁勇，诚信名冠天下。 
● 《三国演义》中描述关羽的外貌为：“身长九尺，髯长二尺，面若重枣，唇若涂脂，丹凤眼、卧蚕眉，相貌堂堂，威风凛凛”。 
● 《三国演义》尊其为蜀国“五虎上将”之首，战功赫赫，忠勇信义的事迹耳熟能详：温酒斩华雄，斩颜良诛文丑 ，挂印封金，过五关斩六将，千里走单骑 ，华容道放曹，长沙大战收服黄忠，单刀赴会，水淹七军，刮骨疗伤等。其被三国时期各方诸侯英雄公认为蜀国虎将，当世豪杰，“皆万人之敌也“。诸葛亮更盛赞：”孟起兼资文武，雄烈过人，一世之杰，黥、彭之徒，当与益德并驱争先，犹未及髯之绝伦逸群。“毛宗岗称其为《演义》三绝中的“义绝”。 
● 关羽去世后，逐渐被神化，民间尊其为“关公”，历代朝廷多有褒封，清代奉为“忠义神武灵佑仁勇威显关圣大帝”，崇为“武圣”，与“文圣” 孔子齐名。故武圣庙有联赞云：“儒称圣，释称佛，道称天尊，三教尽皈依，式詹庙貌长新，无人不肃然起敬；汉封侯，宋封王，明封大帝，历朝加尊号，矧是神功卓著，真所谓荡乎难名。” 
● 至如今，关羽被人们广为敬仰，成为华人最受欢迎的偶像，其忠义的品德尤为可贵，为后世榜样。他与刘备、张飞桃园结义，“誓以共死，不可背之”，后身在曹营心在汉，千里走单骑。为兄长刘备的霸业屡次涉险，立下汗马功劳，最后不幸败走麦城，然誓死不降，关公厉声骂曰：‘碧眼小儿，紫髯鼠辈！吾与刘皇叔桃园结义，誓扶汉室，岂与汝叛汉之贼为伍耶！我今误中奸计，有死而已，何必多言！’ ——“天日心如镜，春秋义薄云”，此乃真武圣也。

● courtesy name Yunchang, was a Chinese military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. Along with Zhang Fei, he shared a brotherly relationship with Liu Bei and accompanied him on most of his early exploits.  
● Guan Yu's life was lionised and his achievements glorified to such an extent after his death that he was deified during the Sui dynasty. Through generations of story telling, culminating in the 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his deeds and moral qualities have been given immense emphasis, making Guan Yu one of East Asia's most popular paradigms of loyalty and righteousness. He is still worshipped by many Chinese people today. In religious devotion he is reverentially called the "Emperor Guan" (Guān Dì) or "Lord Guan" (Guān Gōng). 
● This statue vividly reproduces Guan Yu's image of being handsome, powerful and domineering, and shows his inner character of loyalty, faithfulness, fortitude and courage.
